More Tea Vicar

“More Tea Vicar”
On 6th June 2006, the Reverend Simon Everett, of the Iwerne Valley Benefice in Dorset, set off on
a 1,000 mile cycle journey which will see him go from Land’s End to John o’Groats with the intention
of raising money for two cancer research projects close to his heart.

Looking back on his 17 years as parish priest and as a keen cyclist, Simon has chosen this venture to
support research projects that would help in the fight against two of the most prevalent cancers he
has encountered amongst his parishioners.
Breast  and Prostate  cancer  are  two  of  the most  common  cancers  in  the UK  and  it would be  very
surprising if there was anyone who had not encountered cancer among family or friends. It is hoped
with sponsorship, this venture can help reduce the alarming number of deaths the disease causes.
The Breast cancer research is being carried out at the Breast unit, Guy’s Hosptital and is looking at a
new method of screening patients using Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging. This will enable detection
of smaller cancers, particularly in younger women, less exposure to radiation and in general a more
comfortable overall treatment.
The Prostate cancer care and research centre is based at the Bristol Urological institute. The charity
is committed to establishing a closer  ‘in house’ link between clinics, labs and operating theatres, so
that doctors  can gain a better understanding of  the new behaviors of  cancer and  thereby develop
new treatments.
There is no fixed route but ideally Simon wants to travel via the most interesting, least hilly, quietest
and smoothest roads! The Journey will start at Land’s End up to Bristol via Penzance, Tavistock and
Taunton. Then he will head  through  the Welsh Marches via Gloucester, up  through  the North West
arriving at  the Scottish Borders. The  final  leg of  the  journey will see Simon cross  the east coast of
Scotland via the Great Glen arriving at John o’Groats.

To  track  how  Simon’s  journey  is  going,  local  company  Trakm8,  based  in  Shaftesbury,  Dorset  is
sponsoring him whilst providing a simple tracking device called a Trakm8 Solo. The Trakm8 Solo can
track and trace Simon at every peddle of his journey using GPS (the Global Positioning System).
Tim  Evans,  Sales  and  Marketing  Director  commented,  “For  us  to  sponsor  Simon  on  his  journey
means we can use our technology to raise some awareness of Simon’s charity ride and will enable us
to try and benefit the research into new developments & treatments of cancer.?
Simon’s daily ‘snail trail’ of where he has traveled and the distances will be updated daily for you to
see exactly where in the country Simon is.
